I was in your shoes! When I first looked into it, I thought it was the biggest waste of time. But what I've learned is this: be selective in who you follow, and don't feel compelled to read every tweet! If you limit your exposure, it can be a useful, quick way to share bits of information and be alerted on breaking news. Yes, some people use it to spam, but if you don't follow them it's no problem.
